Simple Changes to Power Up Your Therapy Sessions

Sometimes the most powerful change you can make in a therapy session isn’t a new activity. It’s a new position!

The way a child’s body is positioned during play and learning can completely change the level of engagement, strength, coordination, and regulation you see. Small shifts in position can wake up muscles, improve attention, and help kids access skills that feel impossible in a chair at a table.

If a session feels stuck, try changing the position before changing the activity.

Prone Position Play Ideas

When kids lie on their stomachs during play or tabletop activities, they activate core muscles, shoulder stability, and upper body strength. This position is fantastic for building the foundations needed for handwriting, fine motor control, and endurance.

Quadruped Position Play Ideas

One of our favorite positions for building stability, coordination, and body awareness. It naturally strengthens the core and shoulders while encouraging bilateral coordination and motor planning.

Vertical Surface Play Ideas [FREEBIE!]

Working at vertical surfaces instantly changes how kids engage their bodies. Writing, drawing, or playing on a wall or easel activates shoulder stability, encourages wrist extension, and supports better control of the hands.

Planes of Movement [FREEBIE!]
