If you’re a parent, teacher, or therapist, you probably know at least one kid who: -Acts wild or silly all the time -Has difficulty with waiting or taking turns -Struggles with transitions between activities You may notice that some kids are able to listen during circle time and can be flexible with changing routines and transitions while other children are always melting down and need constant intervention during social interactions. If you’re stumped about why some kids just seem “out of control”, the answer often comes down to one thing: self-regulation. As pediatric OTs and PTs, we spend a lot of time supporting motor skills and functional independence with everyday tasks and routines. But we believe that a huge (and often neglected) part of our role is to help kids develop self-regulation skills. Why? Because without these social/emotional pieces in place, kids are not able to use motor, language, cognitive, and other skills in a functional way in their everyday lives. The first step? Identifying the kids who need help! And that's what today's free printable is all about. CLICK HERE for the Free Printable Self-Regulation Red Flags List This list can help us get a handle on how a child is performing with different areas of self-regulation, which is helpful for developing interventions, accommodations, and other supports. Stay tuned, we’ll be back in your inbox in a couple of days with another awesome self-regulation freebie as we count down to the release of our limited-time Self-Regulation Bundle! -Claire & Lauren |
